Book your snow plowing before the first storm
Winter in Southeast Wisconsin can arrive fast. The first big snow is not the time to start looking for a plow service. Booking early means one less thing to worry about when the flakes start to fall.
Why booking early helps
Plow routes fill up in the fall. Once a route is full, it can be hard to add new stops. When you book early, you have a spot on the route before the first storm. You also have time to ask questions and set clear plans, instead of making a rushed call during a snowstorm.
Know what you need
Before you call, think about what you want cleared. A few questions to ask yourself:
- Is it just the driveway, or also a parking area or turnaround?
- How early do you need to get out in the morning?
- Do you need sidewalks or walkways done too?
- Is there a spot where snow can be piled without blocking your view or your drainage?
Clear answers help your plow service plan the right route and timing for you.
Mark your driveway edges
Once snow covers the ground, it is hard to see where the driveway ends and the lawn begins. Put up driveway markers or stakes along the edges before the ground freezes. They help the plow driver stay on the pavement and keep your grass, landscaping and edging safe.
Walk your property in the fall
Take a short walk around before winter. Look for anything that could get hidden under snow, such as:
- Low landscape lights or decorations
- Hoses, garden tools and toys
- Loose stones or broken edges on the drive
- Low branches that hang over the driveway
Moving or marking these now helps prevent damage later.
Think about drainage and ice
Melting snow piles can refreeze into ice. Talk with your plow service about where snow should go so meltwater drains away from your home and walkways. Good planning now means fewer icy spots all winter.
Plan for the whole season
Winter is long. Ask how your service handles back-to-back storms, drifting snow and late-season snowfalls. Knowing the plan up front makes the season easier for everyone.
